Rio Paralympics: Mariyappan Thangavelu wins gold, Varun Bhati clinches bronze in men’s high jump

The moment finally came for billions of Indians to celebrate a Gold medal as India won the gold medal in the men’s high jump T-42 event at the Rio Paralympics. This historic event took place early morning on Saturday when Mariyappan Thangavelu win the Gold medal by jumping leap of 1.89 meters.

Mariyappan not only win the Gold medal but he also made a history by becoming the first Indian high-jumper to win a gold at the Paralympics.

Meanwhile, he was not alone men who made India proud. Another jumper, Varun Bhati wins the Bronze medal in the high jump T-42 event and stood third by claiming his personal best of 1.86 meters to win the bronze medal.

The Silver model was won by the USA’s Sam Grewe, who performed well and claimed the silver medal in the high jump. Meanwhile, another talented athlete from India Sharad Kumar finished at number six.

The Indians has been profolic in this tournament and their hard work has paid them off. MEnahwile, the Sports Ministry has already announced that the athlete who will bag Gold Medal at Paralympic Games will be awarded the whooping sum of Rs 75 lakhs, Silver Medalist will be awarded Rs. 50 lakhs and the bronze medalist will be awarded Rs. 30 Lakh.
