Rescue teams in northern Minnesota are searching for a group of Girl Scouts who are reported to be stranded in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. According to the reports, two of the girls in the group have been struck by lightning. Rick Slatten of the rescue squad told the Star Tribune that one of the two may be critically injured.
According to the Star Tribune, an eight-member ground crew and paddle teams were dispatched to the area. The reports also revealed that the authorities will try to evacuate the group of six ranging from 15 to 18 years old, included five girls and one guide, by canoe.
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad confirmed late Friday its members are searching for five girls on an island on Knife Lake. They also revealed that all of them experienced the lightning strike. Members of the Minnesota Army National Guard have been asked to aid the search. In addition to the Minnesota State Patrol who sent up an airplane into the skies to try to locate the Girl Scouts. They have since been told they had to land it due to weather, ABC report.
It statement from a Girl Scouts representative said the group had originated from Chicago and were on a pre-planned route. They had been out for a few days and stopped at a Boy Scout camp on Knife Lake, near to the Canadian border for a layover.
