Well, as you all may know that earlier Smriti Irani said that they are working on a project which will curb the freedom of the media and press. Also, now the decision is taken back and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today canceled an order that sought to punish journalists for fake news. This order is taken back which was issued late last night by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which is headed by Smriti Irani. After top editors and opposition parties accused the government of trying to control the media.
Also, the order was issued but now they took it back. Overall, in morning Irani tweeted that she is open to the suggestions regarding the how to modify the order and tackle fake news. It wasn’t enough. Around 10 minutes later, the Prime Minister’s Office said the controversial order was withdrawn which wasn’t that good for Irani,
Overall, things started getting interesting back when the Prime Minister’s Office also said the question of checking fake news should be left to media watchdog Press Council of India. After all of this Smriti Irani’s move triggered such a backlash and triggered her back. She said that the need to stop fake news is widely acknowledged, but the order said that any complaint against a journalist accused of running fake news.
Also, the senior editors said the move wasn’t that good. Also, it will kill the independence of journalists. Also, they added that suspending a journalist’s access to government events and news conferences before the inquiry against them were completed was unfair. Journalists also questioned the deadline for the inquiry because it was decided without consulting those who regulate print and TV media.
