Delhi’s air could turn even more toxic today after Air Quality Index hit 367 on Monday

The air quality of Delhi was recorded at 397, just three points below the severe level and highest of this season, according to the data of the Central Pollution Control Board. Delhi’s air quality is getting hazardous day by day but these new reports show that this might get worse ahead. In the new survey which was done on Sunday morning, the overall AQI (Air Quality Index) was recorded 208 at 10am with drop in wind speed which determined the poor quality of the air and thus it could be harmful/ poisonous for the people living in Delhi, according to Weather Forecasting Research (SAFAR) and Centre-run system of Air Quality.

Delhi air pollution to spike in November, set to peak after Diwali

Air quality in parts of Delhi continued to remain in the “very poor” quality on Monday while the overall status was “poor”. Areas like Dwarka and Narela had an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 361 and 300 respectively. In most parts of Delhi the AQI was over 200.

Delhi’s air on brink of turning severe, worst pollution of season recorded Tuesday

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”

Emergency pollution plan rolled out in Delhi as air quality worsens

AQI helps in determining the quality of air and how it may affect an Individual’s health. This chart shows the quality range of air and its affects.

    AQI Range   Health Concern              colour
       0-50       Good                Green
     51-100     Average               Yellow
    101-150 Below Average               Orange
    151-200     Harmful                 Red
    201-300 Very Harmful               Purple
    301-500    Hazardous               Maroon

Emergency Plan For Delhi Air Pollution To Come Into Action Tomorrow

Previously a survey which was conducted on Saturday, the AQI of Delhi was measured 300 which according to the AQI Chart show the worst scenario of air pollution. The air quality remained poor on Sunday as authorities also predicted further declining conditions of air quality in coming days.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded AQI of different places in Delhi are:

  Area Affected Adversely     Recorded AQI
    Anand Vihar            261
    DTU         207
    ITO Metro Station         204
    Jahangirpuri         300

It is also believed that due to the burning of crop residue in Punjab and Haryana increased the air pollution over past 10 days as the smoke travels towards the capital ‘Delhi’. Thus, mixes with the fog/air and is causing such severe air problem.

On this, Delhi Environment Minister ‘Imran Hussain’ brought light into this concern on Friday by posting images of burning crop residue along the Delhi-Chandigarh Highway. He uploaded the images on twitter and requested the government of Punjab, Haryana, UP, and Rajasthan to look for its solution.

Imran Hussain posted “Instances of stubble burning sighted on Delhi-Chandigarh National Highway. Have again requested Central Government & States Government of Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan to urgently find long term solution.”

On this ‘Arvind Kejriwal’ the Chief Minister of Delhi responded by tweeting “we have been pursuing with Central Haryana and Punjab governments, yet no concrete action has been taken. Farmers again helpless. The entire region including Delhi will again become gas chamber. People will again face difficulty in breathing. This is criminal.”

Emergency plans are going to be implemented under the emergency plan called Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in order to decrease the toxicity from the air and to bring the AQI at standard level range, the Central Pollution Control Board said.

The measures will be taken by analysing the AQI ,the more the air quality falls to severe the major will be the actions and the impact will be huge such as shutting of schools, stopping construction, increasing usage of bus and metro would be implemented etc. If it ranges in moderate or average category than certain steps will be taken to maintain the quality such as pollution control regulations would be implemented for industries, stopping burning of garbage or any residue in open space or landfills. So the measures will be depending according to the air quality.
