National Repeal Day 2018: History, Amendments, Party and Celebrations

National Repeal Day is celebrated today on 5th December every year in US, celebrating the day when the United States ended its 13 year prohibition of alcohol consumption.It was 5th December 1933, when the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed the amendment thus, ending its 13-year experiment, known as great experiment, which make America to consume alcohol again after a long period of time.

The 19th century was a dark period in America. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which had been supporting Banning alcohol for many years, believed alcohol was the main cause of social problems and the news speeded all over. Local bars and pubs were destroyed all over the cities in the country. Many people were also killed at that period of time. Because of the destruction, Congress on 16th January 1919 approved the Eighteenth Amendment, banning alcohol and allegedly putting termination to drunkenness, law-breaking, mental ailment, and scarcity.

The 18th Amendment

Section 1: After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.

Section 2: The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Section 3: This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

The 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution cancelled the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which had instructed nationally Ban on alcohol on 16th January 1919. The Twenty-first Amendment was sanctioned on 5th December 1933. It was one of the exceptional amongst the twenty seven amendments of the U.S. Constitution at that time for being the only one to replace a preceding amendment and to have been approved by State Ratifying Conventions.

Section 1: The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.

Section 2: The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.

Section 3: This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
