After snowfall in north-western hilly regions Mercury drops in National Capital

Cold upsurge situations wrapped up the national capital, Delhi as the mercury fallen to 4.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday during the early hours in the morning. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature could even drop to 4 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city on Thursday early morning. The reason behind it is that the snowfalls in north-western hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are bringing the chilling wave from there.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cold wave is usually a weather circumstances in which the minimum least temperature falls below 4 degrees Celsius.

Earlier it was observed on New Year’s Day where the night temperature was last fall to 4 degrees Celsius. The lowermost temperature from the time was the 4.8 degrees Celsius on January 11.

On Wednesday, not only the temperature was lowered but also the air quality condition of the city was also become worse. After continuing in the “poor” zone for last two days, the Air Quality Index (AQI) value finally falls to “very poor” level on Wednesday.

However, on Wednesday the minimum temperature was 3 degrees lower than the normal temperature and the maximum temperature was 21.3 degrees Celsius, one degree exceeding the normal.

Even though January is usually considered to be the coldest month of the year but the the first 15 days of January have remained warmer than the last 15 days of December. India Meteorological Department (IMD) projection, that the temperature in the left over fragment of this winter would be exceeding normal temperature in the city, which experienced the coldest December in last 13 years.

Kuldeep Srivastava, who is the head of the regional weather forecasting centre in New Delhi stated, “A western disturbance has triggered snowfall in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The northwesterly winds are bringing in the chill from those areas,”

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also projected light to very light rainfall on 22nd January 2019. It stated that additional western disruption is upcoming due to which it could generate rain in early next week.

Kuldeep Srivastava, added by saying, “As the disturbance approaches, the night temperature is expected to rise. It could touch 10 degree Celsius by Monday”.

Central Pollution Control Board official said, “Strong winds had helped to clean up Delhi’s air since Monday. On Monday, the wind speed had shot up to 20km/hour which is usual for this time of the year. But now that the wind speed has dropped below 10 km/hour, the pollution is picking up”.

On Wednesday, the AQI of the city was 371 after the index continued in the “poor” zone, with the values stuck between 201 and 300, over the past two days. Air contaminants and impurities mount up in the city when the wind speeds drop or fall, so, strong winds are required to transmit air contaminants outside the city’s borders.
