Sri Lankan Tamil Refugee Sentenced to 10-year Jail in Rape Case

The District fast track Mahila court in Pudukottai sentenced a 27-year-old man to 10 years of imprisonment on Thursday for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2019.

Reportedly, Suresh Kumar, a history-sheeter from Sri Lankan refugee camp in the Aliyanilai village of Aranthangi, was accused of kidnapping and raping the minor girl of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camp.

Family members of the victim had lodged a complaint in Thirumayam police station and he was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and subsequently arrested.

Judge Ms. Rajalakshmi found him guilty of his offence and pronounced the verdict on Thursday while sentencing the accused to undergo ten years of rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him.

The judge further added that if the accused failed to remit the fine, he should undergo three more months of imprisonment.

Reportedly, before his arrest in the rape case, Suresh was arrested in a few other cases and escaped from jail on two occasions.
