ICC Under-19 World Cup 2020 Squad, Priyam Grag to Lead India

On Monday, the All-India Junior Selection Committee announced India’s squad for the upcoming Under-19 World Cup 2020 which is scheduled to be held in South Africa from January 17 to February 7.

India, being the tournament’s most successful team with four titles and the defending champions, will be led by Uttar Pradesh batsman Priyam Garg while his UP teammate Dhruv Chand Jurel, the wicket keeper-batsman, will be his deputy. The 19-year-old Garg, a right handed top-order batsman, has a first-class double hundred and a List A century to his name. . He was a part of the India C team that finished runner-up in the Deodhar Trophy. He hit a 74 in the final against India B last month.

 

Garg has also led the Indian junior side during the tri-series in England earlier in August this year, with his side emerging victorious in the tournament. He was among the top five run-getters in that series along with Divyaansh Saxena and Yashasvi Jaiswal – the opening duo who’re among key members in the World Cup squad. Notably, Mumbai’s 17-year-old Jaiswal recently made headlines by becoming the youngest to score a List-A double ton.

The 13th edition of the U-19 World Cup will be played among 16 teams which have been split into four groups. India are placed in Group A with first-time qualifier Japan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super League stage.

Meanwhile, ahead of the World Cup, the India U-19 team will travel to South Africa for three one-day matches against the Proteas U-19 side, followed by a Quadrangular Series featuring South Africa U-19, India U-19, Zimbabwe U-19 and New Zealand U-19 between December 26-January 9. However, Hyderabad’s CTL Rakshan will be the additional player in the squad for the South Africa tour and the Quadrangular Series.
