Indian Successfully launches 4th Navigational IRNSS-1D Satellite. Indian Science & Technology has achieved one more milestone today. Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO have successfully launched IRNSS-1D today India’s Fourth Navigational Satellite using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle or PSLV from Sriharikota. Its a fourth of the seven satellites that would create a navigation satellite network for India.
IRNSS-1D Fourth Navigational Satellite of India
“This is the fourth satellite in a constellation of seven and it now gives India the indigenous capability for a satellite-based navigation system, this will help the common man. This will also help India helping the SAARC countries getting the benefits of satellite technology as the signals can help them as well,” Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) in Prime Minister’s Office and Minister for Space told NDTV.
Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C27) lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota at 5.19pm and placed IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System)-1D weighing 1,425kg in a sub-geostationary orbit after a 20minutes flight Says timesofindia.indiatimes.
IRNSS-1D is the fourth of the seven satellites in the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) series after IRNSS-1A, IRNSS-1B and IRNSS-IC. It has been placed in the geosynchronous orbit to provide navigation, tracking and mapping services Says Hindustan Times.
The fifth of the IRNSS series is slated to be launched in August this year. Once five of them are in the constellation, India can have its own GPS like that of the US.
With today’s successful launch, the Indian space agency says very soon India’s own ‘GPS’ system will become operational, a useful addition for the common man, but most needed by the Indian armed forces as it will give them the much needed strategic depth, told Ndtv.
