Mangoola mine became the third coal mine to be approved by the Australian authorities in the last month.  The project will be operated by Glencore, as the company will create a new coal pit north of an existing mine to attract nearly 50m tonnes of fossil fuel over the period of eight years.

The company has said that it invested over five years for detailed study and consultation of the project. According to the Glencore, the project will create over 100 construction jobs and secure the current employees of Mangoola. One of the many coal mining projects operating in New South Wales, Mangoola mines is known for its size. It is a massive surface mine with the capability of producing millions of tonnes of thermal coal every year.

The approval of this crucial project and two others in a short span off time is a testament to the importance of coal industry for Australia, especially in states like New South Wales and Queensland. The sector plays a vital role to contribute a significant amount to the country’s GDP. It employs thousands of employees and creates a huge supply chain for other businesses, besides meeting the rising power demand.

Many coal mining companies have been producing and exporting coal to different parts of the world for electricity generation, ranking hefty revenues to boost the country’s economy. The Queensland-based Carmichael mine, operated by Adani Group Australia also started producing coal this year, which is set to be exported to India in the coming months. The coal derived from Carmichael mine will be part of Adani Group’s growing energy portfolio, consisting of thermal power, solar power, wind power, etc.

For the region, Carmichael project is seen as an opener to huge reserves of coal in the Galilee Basin. The operator has been keen to employ the workforce from local communities, especially Rockhampton and Townsville, to meet the human resource gap. When it comes to Adani Group, Australia is seen as a coal-rich nation that could help India prevent the shortage of black metal in the future to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

This is an eye-opener for the authorities in Australia, as quite a few questions have been raised on the coal industry in the recent times. However, giving a go-ahead to Mangoola coal mine means that the government bodies have yet again recognized the importance of finding the middle ground. This new project will add to the production capabilities of the state to supply quality coal amidst the rising coal prices across the world.

During the ten years of its operation, over 100 million tonnes of coal have been mined from Mangoola Coal mine. Having got the approval to continue open cut mining adjacent to the north of existing mine, Glencore will look to maximize the possibilities in the long run.
