Kevin Pietersen in an interview praised the IPLs lead run-scorers, discussed the terrible start of Mumbai Indians and also talked about why some famous names are struggling.
Mumbai Indians are having a nightmare
This IPL has not favored Mumbai. It is said that batters get you sponsors and bowlers get you premiers but Kevin has not been able to understand why they (Mumbai Indians) weekend their bowling so much by using a spot on injured Jofra and Trent go elsewhere. “Left-arm seamers are a valuable commodity in shorter form because of different angles and Trent is world-class,” Kevin said. “Ahead of Quinton and Pandya brothers, Trent is their biggest loss but they’re all great players. Lots of great players that made the team have left and they had a horrible start to the competition,” said Kevin.
Jos Buttler is the best in the world
Kevin says that Jos made an amazing start in the competition and is the best T20 batter in the world. “His array and execution of shots are unmatched along with his calmness and presence of mind and KL Rahul possesses the same skills,” says Kevin. He said David Warner is another one who is going well. “He is an emotional person and everyone saw that when he struggled last season in SRH but if you make him happy off the field, he will reward you on the field and Delhi is an example of this,” said Kevin when interviewed.
Three format players need a break
Kevin said that several players are burnt out. “Jos benefitted from a break during England’s Test series in West Indies whereas Rohit Sharma, Virat Kholi etc play all formats and live in bubbles for months. They have fulfilled most matches in every format in the previous years and they’re under constant pressure as millions of people watch them.” Kevin says that even as a commentator he is working flat-out but that’s nothing compared to these guys. Kevin thinks that these players need a break of at least 6 months so that they can travel, clear their heads and then come back because it would do them some good.
The expanded competition is working well
“The two new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants are doing well and have added to the competition because they’re new. Some teams wanted to accommodate old players but these teams are a bunch of new players with fresh energy. Everyone is in the same boat and they all seem to be having fun.” Kevin says it won’t be a surprise to see either of them lifting the title in a few weeks.
