New Delhi: On Sunday, a plea was filed in the Delhi High Court for capping the airfares across the country so that the customers are not flenched arbitrary by the airlines in India.
The Public Interest Litigation(PIL) requests the court to direct the concerned authorities to make guidelines so as to restrict on airfare and stop the private airlines from charging exorbitantly from the customers.
Amit Sahni who is an advocate had filed an RTI seeking information regarding the airfares. The Ministry of Civil Aviation answered that these airfares are not controlled by the Government.
In the month of February, citing Jat Agitation in Haryana, reportedly that some airlines forced some passengers to pay Rs. 90,000 for their journey. The plea said that if there would have been a restriction or cap, the airlines companies could not charged such huge amount from the passengers.
The plea added that the private airlines have fleeced people even in some emergent situation and the Government has stood as a mute spectator.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that capping the airfares will not make a good sense of business because such restriction may discourage the airlines to fly on non-profitable routes and it could also put the government regional connectivity in the danger.
The counsel stated in his plea that it is totally unfair on the part of Ministry of Civil Aviation to state that Ministry can not regulate the fare of airlines and leaves the whole decision of on private airlines to decide the airfare as per their own wish.
