The Assam Legislative Assembly election 2021 was held on March 27 in the state of Assam. This15th quinquennial legislative assembly election was concluded on April 6 after conducting the election in three phases in total. The elections were held for electing 126 MLAs in the upcoming 15th Assam Legislative Assembly as the Assam’s 14th Legislative Assembly is all set to conclude on 31st May 2021. After the three phases of elections were held successfully, the counting of votes for the same has started on April 2 from 8 am onwards.

2021 Assam Legislative Assembly Election was held on three different phases from March 27 (Phase 1) to April 6 (Phase 3) on three different dates which are as follows:
27th March 2021: Phase 1 for 47 seats
1st April 2021: Phase 2 for 39 seats
6th April 2021: Phase 3 for 40 seats
Counting of votes is taking place on May 2. Meanwhile, as per to the report, there were total number of 2, 33, 74,087 voters that were eligible to vote in Assam in the 2021 assembly elections. The voter turnout in these three phases was 82.04%, in Phase 1 it was 79.93%, in Phase 2 it was 80.96% and in Phase 3 it was 85.20%.

Previously, the Assam Legislative Assembly Election was held in 2016, in which we saw a change of power as the Indian National Congress (INC) lost the poll to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since 2001, INC has formed the government under Tarun Gogoi in the Indian state of Assam, however, they lost their majority after losing from Sarbananda Sonowal from BJP.

Three major party leaders participating for this Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2021 are Sarbananda Sonowal (BJP), Debabrata Saikia (INC), and Lurinjyoti Gogoi (AJP). The Assam Jaitya Parishad (AJP) is Assam state political party formed by two student organizations such as All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP). The party is formed last year in September 2020 and this will be their first time to participate in Legislative Assembly Election in Assam.
