Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics Games

Beijing is the country who won the award to host the Olympics Games 2022. Beijing beats Kazakhstan’s Almaty in an International Olympic Committee vote to become the first city to have won both summer and winter editions of the world’s biggest multi-sports event.

The secret vote was conducted by paper ballot, after the first electronic vote experienced technical faults with the tablets.

Despite concerns about a lack of natural snow in the city’s distant mountains, and protests from human rights groups, Beijing had been the clear favourite to win the vote after it successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The IOC opted for a safe pair of hands after four of the initial six candidates — including winter sports powerhouses Stockholm and Oslo — had pulled out of the campaign due to lack of local support or financial concerns.

It is part of a broader trend of economic reality trumping the romanticism of the Games. Tokyo last week scrapped their centrepiece of the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2019 Rugby World Cup – a new national stadium – in favour of a cheaper version. Also this week, Boston pulled out of the running for the 2024 Summer Games, two years before the vote even takes place.
