July 3, 1944, was also the freedom of Minsk, the capital of Belarus from the Wehrmacht during the Minsk invasion (code-named “Bagration”).Since 1991, the Independence Day was commemorated on July 27, the day of the announcement of Sovereignty of Belarus. August 25, 1991, after the August celebration in Moscow, the Belarusian SSR gave the announcement of Sovereignty of the Republic the constitutional state of the law.
On December 10, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Belarus approve the Belavezha Accords which officially declared the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Independence was formally received December 26, 1991, in consolidation with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The choice to celebrate Independence Day on July 3, the day of the freedom of Belarus from the Nazis, was made during the 1996 national referendum introduced by President Alexander Lukashenko.
The main event of Independence Day is a grand military parade. After the formal part, the holiday social functions start. Across the country ceremonies and festivities are held. In the evening in Minsk firecrackers are arranged.
The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has greeted the president of Belarus with his regards and compliments and also, the people of the Government of Belarus on the night of their Independence Day.
In a broadcast to His Excellency Mr. Alexander Lukashenko, the President of the Republic of Belarus, the President has said, On behalf of the Administration and the citizens of India and on his own behalf, it is with delightful that he extends gracious greetings and compliments to him and to the generous people of Belarus on the occasion of their Independence Day.
It is a matter of gratification that the jointly beneficial cooperation between India and Belarus has found new strength and substance in recent times and they have accepted to take their partnership to glorious heights in the various areas identified by them.
He recalls with pleasure his visit to Belarus in 2015 and their fruit bearing discussions on the full range of upshots on their mutual agenda.
He takes this opportunity to convey his best wishes for his Excellency of good wellness and well-being and for the sustained progress and victory of the civil people of Belarus.”
