According to the media’s reports on Wednesday, China has made an advanced compact size ‘Radar’ that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. But the most interesting part is that it can constantly capture its surveillance over an area same as the size of India.
This Radar system is developed domestically in China and will help the Chinese navy to keep whole eyes over the China’s seas. It would enable the navy to detect incoming threats such as enemy ships, aircraft and missiles from a very far distance.
Liu Yongtan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) from the Harbin Institute of Technology, is given credit to have improved and advanced the China’s radar technology and mounting advanced compact size radar for the PLA Navy’s carrier fleet to “maintain constant surveillance over an area the size of India.”
President Xi Jinping consulted the nation’s top science award with prize money of $ 1.116 million to Liu and one more military scientist, Qian Qihu at an event in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday for their offerings for the nation’s technology.
Qian was congratulated for building up the theoretical system for China’s present defence engineering and contributions in producing concealed underground nuclear shelter facilities, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Liu said, “Relying on traditional technologies, our surveillance and monitoring could only cover about 20 per cent of our maritime territory. With the new system, we can cover the whole area.”
A senior associate of Liu’s team told the Post that the new system would be a ship-based OTH radar system. He quoted in the Post that the floating radar “will increase our navy’s information gathering capabilities in critical areas” plus the South China Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
China is not alone in this race. Not only China is developing its nation technology but Raytheon, a chief defence contractor was given a patent in 2016 for such system. Raytheon’s project has transmitting vessel which transmits the signal and several receiver ships.
The Raytheon design circles a transmitting vessel and several Radio waves are sent into the air by the source and are gathered by the receiver ships after which they pass on the signals to aircraft carriers via satellite or airborne relays. According to recent reports, China had erected an antenna that is approximately five times the size of New York.
China has an annual defence budget of $ 175 billion and is investing seriously to strengthen its naval defence. China is building heavy military equipments which will compete with US for inclusive tactical influence.
