The Indian Olympic Association has raised donations from its state affiliates and National Sports Federations for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and the amount has reportedly touched Rs 1 crore on Sunday.
Contributions raised by IOA for fight against COVID-19
The IOA said in a statement, “Rs 1,02,56,003 so far has been raised by the NSFs, state Olympic associations and non-members (who have applied for recognition) and others. IOA is deeply grateful to its NSFs and state associations and other federations and bodies for extending their support and humble contributions towards the cause of our nation’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The statement further added, “In these challenging times, the coming together of the Olympic family to support the nation’s need once again reinforces our belief that we shall always come out stronger to serve sports and make the nation proud.”
The statement also said that the IOA will transfer the donations to PM CARES Fund.
Among the SOAs, the Uttaranchal Olympic Association has made the biggest contribution at Rs 5 lakh.
Additionally, a number of NSFs have made contributions of their own in addition to what they committed to the IOA. Hockey India has committed Rs 1 crore to the cause while the All India Football Federation has committed Rs 25 lakh.
Earlier, several sports personalities including Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, shuttler PV Sindhu and athletes Neeraj Chopra and Hima Das, have also come forward to provide financial contributions to fight against the deadly disease.
The COVID-19 outbreak, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has claimed around 70,000 lives globally while infecting more than a million people. In India, the Health Ministry said that there has been an increase of 490 coronavirus cases in the last 12 hours, taking India’s total number of positive cases to 4067 including 3666 active cases, 292 cured/discharged/migrated people and 109 deceased people.
