Coronavirus Outbreak: 93 migrant workers in Gujarat held for defying COVID-19 lockdown, attacking cops

On Monday, at least 93 migrant labourers have been arrested for allegedly defying the countrywide lockdown. The incident is of the Surat city, Gujarat, where the migrant labourers are also alleged to attacking police, an official said.

The situation in Ganesh Nagar and Tirupati Nagar localities became tense late Sunday night when around 500 migrant workers living nearby, came on roads, where they demanded transportation facility in order to reach their native places, Deputy Commissioner of Police Vidhi Chaudhari said in a statement.

Another police official stated that a lot of people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar live in the Pandesara area of Surat, where both the localities are situated, as well as they work in powerlooms along with textile processing units here.

Chaudhari said, “When the police were trying to convince them to remain indoors, they started pelting stones at the security personnel. Several police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting,”

After which police have to fire 30 teargas shells in order to disperse the crowd, said Chaudhari, whose official car was also damaged in that occurrence.

On Sunday night, some of the troublemakers were arrested, while some others were held on Monday, she said.

The official said, “We have lodged an FIR against a mob of 500 people and arrested 93 of them.” The statement further added, “They were charged under sections for rioting, attacking police, damaging public property and also under provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act for defying restrictions,”
