Cyclone Amphan Live Updates: Weather, Forecast, Winds, Heavy Rainfall in Few Districts of Odisha

The extremely severe cyclonic storm named ‘Amphan’ is expected to attain more strength and to unleash heavy rains after it hit over the Bay of Bengal at 2.30 am and now in the next 12 hours, it is also likely to strengthen further more into a super cyclonic storm, according to the Indian Meteorological Body statement on Monday.

  • From Monday evening, it is highly expected that Coastal Odisha would experience light to moderate rainfall at several sites with heavy falls at remote places.
  • This very severe cyclonic storm, ‘Amphan’ is also likely to cross the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Digha and Hatiya Islands for the duration of 09:00 to 12:00 pm of on May 20.
  • Fishermen are strictly advised to not undertake their usual activities into Bay of Bengal and also the coasts of West Bengal-Odisha from May 18 till May 21, 2020. The fishermen, who are already out in the sea, were also asked to come back to the coasts by May 17.
  • The cyclone is all set to move on the way to north-northeast and will cross Digha in West Bengal-Hathiya island in Bangladesh of 20th May 2020 on the afternoon/evening with a wind speed of 155-165 kmph, IMD director general, Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra, said in a statement.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to hold a high-level meeting at 4 pm regarding cyclone alert with the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Disaster Management Authority on Monday.
  • There are about 50 boats of fishermen that have been damaged in Rameswaram after the thunderstorm as well as the rainfall which hit previous night in the parts of the state.
  • The cyclone ‘Amphan’ might cause widespread minor or major railways, overhead powerlines, standing crops, plantations, orchards, among many, as per to the IMD.
  • So far, around 17 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been set out in Odisha along with West Bengal. Whereas, total number of seven teams of the force have been also deployed in some of the six districts of West Bengal and total ten teams are on alert in seven districts in the state of Odisha.
  • The IMD has also warned that the high-velocity winds might give rise to extensive destruction to mud houses as well as some partial damage to ‘pucca’ structures.
  • The personnel of the NDRF were also deployed in West Bengal and Odisha on Sunday, which said that it was ready to take on massive evacuation of 11 lakh people are expected to be severely hit by the cyclone ‘Amphan’.
