India is hosting the 8th BRICS summit 2016 in Goa on 16th October: Live Updates

Panaji:  India was the host nation of the 8th Summit  and the 9th will be organised by China. The BRICS Summit 2016 adopted the Goa Declaration which unanimously hit out at the growing threat of terrorism, among other issues. PM Modi said that we have adopted the Goa Declaration that lays down a comprehensive vision for our cooperation. Combating terrorism and its supporters will be a BRICS priority.

He added that we agreed that those who support, sponsor, shelter and nurture forces of violence and terror are as much a threat to us as terrorists themselves. We were unanimous in recognising the threat that extremism, radicalisation, and terrorism present.

PM Modi said that leaders of the member states adopted the declaration, which, among other issues, spoke of the need to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. We welcome the early entry into force of the Paris Climate agreement, India was proud to ratify it on 2nd October this year.

On the New Development Bank, PM Modi said that BRICS nations agreed that it should continue to focus on renewable energy sectors, technology and infrastructure. He also added that in order to further bridge the gap in the global financial architecture, we agreed to fast track the setting up of a BRICS Rating Agency.

PM Modi said that India has transformed into one of the most open economies of the world. The BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach summit will be held later in the day where PM Modi will hold talks with invited representatives of the BIMSTEC states. Today, PM Modi met with PM Tshering Tobgay, and Sri Lankan President Sirisena. The state counsellor of  Myanmar – Aung San Suu Kyi also arrived in Goa and will meet with Prime Minister Modi later in the day.

The other nations invited to the BRICS Summit are Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand and Bangladesh. The Summit helps member nations of BIMSTEC(Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), in its outreach with BRICS nations. BIMSTEC was launched in the year 1997.

Yesterday, PM Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin. The first day of the BRICS Summit concluded with an informal dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Russia and India signed a total of 17 agreements/MoUs during the meeting on Saturday.

The 8th BRICS Summit is being held in Benaulim, Goa. The tourist state has been converted into a fortress with the entire state being put on high alert given the presence of world leaders.
