When India got freedom from the British rule, the need to achieve the welfare of its Armed Forces personnel raised immediately for the Indian government. To solve this issue the team of board under Defence Minister on 28th August 1949 decided to start Flag Day on 7th December annually. The idea behind celebrating the Flag Day was to distribute small flags to the general public of the nation and in order to collect donations in return.

There is not a thread in it but scorns self-indulgence, weakness and capacity.

Flag Day achieved more importance as it deliberates that it is the obligation and duty of the Indian civilian population to take care of the Armed Forces personnel’s families and dependents that fight for the country’s people and pride.

Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister of India, on December 7, 1954 said in favour of Flag Day by saying:

“A few weeks ago, I visited Indo-China and saw our officers and men attached to the International Commission there. It gave me a thrill to see their smart bearing and the good work they were doing in that distant land. What pleased me still more was their general popularity with the people there. By their efficiency as well as their friendliness, they enhanced the reputation of India. Among them were people from all parts of India. They observed no provincial or other differences amongst themselves. I am sure my countrymen will be pleased to learn of them and would like to indicate their appreciation of these young men who serve our country both here and elsewhere so well. A way to indicate that appreciation is to contribute to the Flag Day Fund.”

Armed Forces Flag Day Significance

The Flag Day is principally celebrated to assist three elementary purposes

  • Reintegration of battle victims, sufferers and injured personnel
  • Helping personnel and their families for their well being
  • Relocation and welfare of the veterans and their families

On this day small flags are distributed and small amount of funds are collected from the people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel. It is the best way to show the respect and appreciation by the general public for the Armed Forces who can go through anything, even losing their life for nations pride and security.
