October 1 is celebrated as International Day of Older Persons every single year. The day is observed in order to raise awareness about issues that are affecting the elderly, like senescence and elder abuse. The day also celebrates and honour to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
International Day of Older Persons 2020
The United Nations General Assembly voted as October 1 to establish the International Day of Older Persons on December 14, 1990, as recorded in Resolution 45/106. For the first time after its establishment, the holiday was observed on October 1, 1991.
This holiday is very similar to National Grandparents Day that is held in the United States and Canada along with the Double Ninth Festival in China as well as Respect for the Aged Day in Japan. The main objective for these observances is to focus on ageing organizations as well as the United Nations Programme on Ageing.

International Day of Older Persons History & Activities
The International Day of Older Persons is observed to create and spread the awareness and empathy in the regards of the well- being of the elderly. On this day, most of the people usually spend their time with their grandparents, by visiting old age homes and N.G.O’s as well as by cooking or baking for them. Some of the kids and even the older ones also give greeting cards to their elderly on this day to make them feel special and happy.
