Jalpaiguri Child trafficking: Dist Child Protection Officer and Dist Child Welfare Committee officer arrested

In connection with the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case, the Darjeeling District Child Protection Officer and a member of the district Child Welfare Committee have been arrested by the Crime Investigation Department(CID).

 

These two officer arrested by the CID team probing the case after women’s wing leader of BJP Juhi Chowdhury, Chief Adoption Officer of an NGO Sonali Mondal, its Chairperson Chandana Chakraborty and the brother of Chandana – Manas Bhowmik were arrested earlier by the CID.

The CID along with district police officers said that Mrinal Ghosh who is Darjeeling District Child Protection Officer and Debasish Chandra who is the district Child Welfare Committee member were arrested and questioned at length at Pintail village in Siliguri yesterday.

The duo was arrested for their alleged involvement in the selling of babies and children from the NGO – ‘Bimala Sishu Griho’ in India and abroad in the last few months.

The CID team charged Sonali, Chandana and Manas with selling about 17 children, aged between 1 and 14 years, to foreigners by entering into shady adoption deals.

During raids at homes and nursing homes in Baduria area of North 24 Parganas district, Kolkata and some other parts of West Bengal in the month of November 2017, the CID had unearthed a child trafficking racket. This is a great success of the department to unearth such a huge child trafficking racket in the country.
