On Saturday, Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana has taken oath as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The reputable Supreme Court judge was sworn in by the President Ram Nath Kovind in the oath ceremony on Saturday. Among prominent ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Vice president M. Venkaiah Naidu, and Ravi Shankar Prasad (law minister) were also present at the ceremony.
After the swearing in, Justice Ramana was congratulated by every ministers present in the event along with President Kovind who wished him best and successful tenure. The former Supreme Court judge took the oath in English and has succeeded the former Chief Justice Justice SA Bobde, who retired on this Friday.
About Chief Justice NV Ramana
Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, who is well-known as NV Ramana is appointed as the 48th and current Chief Justice of India. He was born in 1957 in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.
In his initial days of academic year, he was a student leader and has fought for civil liberties for the duration of the ‘The Emergency’ held all across the nation in the year 1975. For the protest, he also sacrificed one year from his academic session.
Before appointed as the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana was Judge of Supreme Court of India from 17th February 2014 to 23rd April 2021. Earlier this, he was also appoints as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court starting from 2nd September 2013 to 16th February 2014. From June 2000 to September 2013, this former Supreme Court Judge served as the Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court
Least known fact about NV Ramana is that in the initial stage of his career, Ramana worked as a journalist for two years in the regional Eenadu newspaper. After that he practiced law and enrolled as an advocate in the year 1983.
As of now, Chief Justice NV Ramana has practiced in the Supreme Court of India, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals, and High Court of Andhra Pradesh. Talking about his expertise, he has specialized in Constitutional, Service laws, Criminal, and Inter-State River laws.
Earlier this, Justice K Subba Rao from Andhra Pradesh as served as the ninth Chief Justice of India from the year 1966 to 19967. This makes Justice NV Ramana as the India’s second Chief Justice from Andhra Pradesh after more than two decades. Now he is appointed as 48th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
