The winner of 15 Grammy Awards, the most in the blues genre, Mr. King achieved his success despite having only one Top Twenty single, “The Thrill Is Gone,” which reached number 15 on the pop charts in 1970. He was recently admitted to hospital with high blood pressure and a diabetes-related illness, having lived with the illness for over 30 years and often campaigned for greater awareness of the disease. He had 15 biological and adopted children. Family members say 11 survive.
