Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2021: Tithi, Significance Date, Lokhi Pujo Wishes Quotes

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is celebrated every year with great devotion to Goddess Lakshmi and this year, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is going to be celebrated on October 13 (Sunday). As soon as Goddess Durga along with her family is immersed in the holy water on Vijaya Dashami which is located the eastern part of India, the devotees then gear up for Lakshmi Puja.

The word Kojagari is the resultant of the phrase ko jagorti or Who is awake? As per to the legends, Goddess Lakshmi descends on the Earth on the full moon day of the Ashwin month as well as it is believed to walk around asking ‘who is awake?’ all those devotees who answer her get her divine blessings.

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is mostly celebrated in West Bengal, Odisha as well as Assam. The Lakshmi Puja falls on a full moon day in the lunar month of Ashwin just after Vijaya Dashami or the immersion of the ten-armed Goddess Durga.

Lakshmi Puja which is observed on Purnima tithi in the month of Ashwin is known as Kojagari Puja, the day is more popularly known as Bengal’s Lakshmi Puja. In some other parts of India, the day is also called Sharad Purnima.

Kojagari Lakshmi Tithi Date

Mainly, the day is to celebrate the harvest festival in India on the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin, which in the English calendar means September-October.

In other parts of India, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on Amavasya tithi for the period of Diwali. Kojagari Purnima concerns the observance of the Kojagari ‘vrata’. People or devotees on this day perform this Vrata in front of the idol under the moonlight after fasting for the whole day.

After fasting for the entire day, Devotees break the fast at night after they read the Vrat Katha after which they first offer kheer and khichdi to the gods and then break their fast.

Sharad Purnima Date 2021

On this festival, the houses are also decorated with traditional ‘alpona’ (Rangoli) along with the footprints of Lakshmi are drawn in order to invite Goddess into their homes.

There is also an interesting fact about Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, that in many old households of eastern India, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of a “short” or as a red colored clay disk where the images of the goddess are painted by the artists on the disk. But sadly, with the passage of time, this beautiful art of ‘short’ painting is heading towards a slow extinction.

As per to the beliefs, it is also said in the Puranas that Goddess Lakshmi takes rounds of the earth to watch the actions of human beings during this night.

 Kojagari Lakshmi Significance

This year, the Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is going to be celebrated on October 13 on Sunday. As per Drik Panchang, Purnima Tithi is going to start from 12:36 am on October 31, 2021, and will carry on till 02:38 am on October 14, 2021, where the tithi will finally end.
