Bhopal Bhupendra Singh who is Home minister of Madhya Pradesh had blamed ‘ghosts’ for farmer suicides in the state. But now, he has now clarified his remarks.

Singh said that the government never said that ghosts are the reason for farmer suicides. This is what victims’ families claim.

On Wednesday, in shocking remarks in a written reply in the state Assembly, Singh had  listed ghosts among the reasons which were driving farmers to suicides.

He said that Bhoot, pret, upari saya(apparitions) were forcing farmers to suicide, not crop loss.

Today, the minister clarified and said that the written reply of an RTI to the MLA was based on police information and on statements made by the relatives of the deceased farmers.

The remarks caused uproar in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The main opposition Congress want the clarification from the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in the state that whether the government believed in superstition or not.

Later Singh had said seeking to clarify his remarks that in some rural areas, a ritual prevails wherein people are freed of influence of spirits.
