Meghalaya Road Mishap: 16 people killed and over 50 injured

SHILLONG: In a terrifying accident, on Monday at least 16 people were killed and 62 injured when an Overspeed truck ferrying them to a church service overturned after hitting a concrete railing in West Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya today.

The road accident took place around 8:30 AM in the morning at Nongspung village which is about 11 km away from the district headquarters Nongstoin.

The Superintendent of Police of West Khasi Hills Sylvester Nongstoin said that the truck with loaded with the people overturned after hitting the railing at the side of the road due to overspeeding. 12 people died on the spot, while five succumbed to their injuries at the Nongstoin Civil Hospital.

Those who are seriously injured were taken to different hospitals including Shillong Civil Hospital and NEIGRHIMS. People from three villages – Nongbudum Mawbyrkong and Nginiong – were travelling in the truck and were on their way to Nonglang village for attending a Synod.

The Health minister of Meghalaya – Roshan Warjri visited the city hospital and met the injured persons.

The home minister of Meghalaya HDR Lyngdoh also expressed condolences to all the bereaved families.
