Two years ago, then-head of Mercedes Dieter Zetsche said that the brand has planned to have electric versions for all of its models by 2022 to which a year later, Mercedes had unveiled its first electric SUV.

Now, according to a tweet by Head of Digital Transformation at Daimler AG Sascha Pallenberg, the new CEO Ola Källenius promised a zero-emission version of the company’s G-Class.
Mercedes could use its hydrogen technology to build a zero-emissions G-Class, but Källenius clearly stated the upcoming model will be electric. EQG is, then, at least if it follows the naming system used by other electric Mercedes models like the EQC, the upcoming EQA, and the EQS we discovered as a concept. He didn’t reveal when the model will make its debut, precisely what will power it, or which markets it will be sold in. However, odds are the battery-powered G will be sold alongside the gasoline-burning (and, in Europe, diesel-powered) variants rather than instead of them.

If Mercedes puts an electric version of its iconic SUV into production, it won’t exactly be the first of its kind. Austrian company Kreiel replaced the G-Class’ internal-combustion engine with a battery and an electric motor and sold it to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
We have no idea what shape Merc’s version of the EV G will take, but confirmation that it’s on the cards. Indeed, the same tweet from Pallenberg also noted how Källenius even considered binning the entire model range.

But the company is apparently willing to invest in necessary engineering to make it all work, with Källenius saying “In the past, there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now I’d say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class.”
