Mumbai: 1 dead as fire breaks out at Churchill Chamber near Taj Mahal Hotel

One person was killed after a fire broke out at a four-storey building near the Taj Mahal hotel in south Mumbai’s Colaba today on July 21, 2019. The deceased has been identified as 54-year-old Shyam Aiyar. According to the officials, the firefighters have brought the situation under control.

Fifteen people were rescued so far from the burning Churchill Chamber building which is about a two-minute walk from the five-star hotel. However, their condition is still unknown as some of those rescued complained of breathing problems due to inhalation of smoke and were admitted to a state-run hospital.

According to the people around the place, the firefighters were seen in heavy gear climbing up a steel ladder and spraying water from a third-floor window of the building while black smoke billowed out from the windows.

As of now the cause of the fire is not known. The Mumbai fire department said the blaze was first reported at 12:20 pm and the fire was declared level-2 at 12.25 pm. Some people are still trapped and the fire fighting and rescue operation is still on.

Last month, a fire broke out on the first floor of a 21-storey building in Wadala. According to fire brigade officials, the building caught fire around 3.15 am but they got a call only at 3.33 am. According to a fire brigade official, a preliminary inquiry revealed that the fire was caused by a short-circuit.
