Indian parathlete, Nishad Kumar made history by earning a silver medal for India in the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 in athletics sports under the Men’s High Jump event that took place on 29th August 2021. Kumar took part under the T47 category which is for those Paralympians who have a single below the elbow or wrist amputation and similar kind of disability, both the legs are working under normal conditions. Kumar best attempt of 2.06 not only made him won the silver medal at the ongoing Paralympics but also created an Asian record. Here, Unites States athlete Dallas Wise, as well as Nishad Kumar from India both, completed on the same mark of 2.06 metres, however, the latter one had passed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise crossed the 2 marks, as an outcome, Nishad won the silver. However, Kumar was not the only one who represented India at the High Jump T47 event, another athlete Ram Pal also took part in the event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too took to his Twitter account and expressed his happiness over the winning of Kumar in the Paralympics. Virender Sehwag shared a small clip of Nishad Kumar over his Twitter account and stated “#NishadKumar jumps 2.06m in Men’s High Jump under the T47 and final bagging a silver medal. This is the second meal of the day in India.” The short clip shared by Sehwag over his Twitter handle is of Kumar in which he can be seen finishing his last attempt.

Undoubtedly, Kumar not only took home a silver medal with a jump of 2.06m which equals the Asian Record, set by him in 2021. PM Modi also tweeted, “More joyful news comes from Tokyo. Unquestionably pleased that Nishad Kumar wins the Silver medal in 2020 Summer Paralympics in the Men’s High Jump under the T47 event.” Modi further praised Kumar by stating, “He is an exceptional athlete with notable skills and perseverance. Congratulations to him.”
