The Pandemic Threatens the World’s Poorest Countries

A coronavirus pandemic has put the world’s poorest countries at risk. This was stated by Managing Director for Development and Partnership of the World Bank (WB) Marie Pangestu during the videoconference of the G20 Agriculture Ministers G20.

Pangestu noted that clear safety advice for supply chain workers should be provided, new technologies should be used, experience and data should be shared. The WB spokeswoman also called for an end to export restrictions and “unnecessary barriers.”

Earlier, it was reported that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the G20 group of major economies simultaneously decided to postpone the payment of debt for several dozen poor countries.
The IMF has deferred payments totaling more than a billion dollars and creditor states more than 20 billion dollars. This decision was driven by the conditions in the global economy caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, as of April 21, more than 2.5 million people were infected with a coronavirus worldwide, of whom 175,6 thousand died, and more than 678,5 thousand were cured.
