After call with PM Modi, Donald Trump asks Imran Khan to ‘moderate rhetoric’

In order to reduce tensions over Kashmir issue, US President Donald Trump asked Pakistani PM Imran Khan to “moderate rhetoric” with India. Reportedly, Trump made the statement after his telephonic conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 19, 2019.

Meanwhile, this was the second Trump’s telephonic call with the Pakistani PM in less than a week. Trump highlighted the need to reduce tensions and moderate rhetoric with India over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir during the call. Trump reaffirmed the need to avoid escalation of the situation and urged restraint on both sides.

According to the statement released by the White House, Mr. Trump “reaffirmed the need to avoid escalation of the situation and urged restraint” on both sides during the conversation. Further, the two leaders also agreed to work towards strengthening US-Pakistan economic and trade cooperation

US president also took to Twitter to confirm the same. He wrote, “Spoke to my two good friends, Prime Minister Modi of India, and Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan, regarding Trade, Strategic Partnerships and, most importantly, for India and Pakistan to work towards reducing tensions in Kashmir. A tough situation, but good conversations!”

Earlier on Monday, PM Modi held a 30-minute call with US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed bilateral and regional matters. The call was marked by warmth and cordiality which characterises the relations between the two leaders. The Indian Prime Minister, PM Modi also recalled his meeting with Donald Trump in Osaka on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in June 2019.

As per the statement of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), in his telephonic conversation with Mr. Trump, PM Modi highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception. It further added, “In the context of the regional situation, the prime minister stated that extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace.”
