On Monday Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an in-flight analysis to measure the loss and damage caused by Cyclone Fani in the state Odisha. After the survey, Prime Minister further declared Rs 1000 crore for relief work adding to Rs 381 crore which was proclaimed previously.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrival at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, he was received by Governor Ganeshi Lal as well as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Modi, who has three rallies which was planned later in the day in West Bengal and Jharkhand, straightaway continued on the way to his chopper to carry out the survey of the worst-hit Puri district and other affected regions.
At least 34 people were killed for the duration of Cyclone ‘Fani’, which hit through coastline Odisha on Friday last, affecting extensive destruction and leaving hundreds struggling with water scarcity and power cut.
The prime minister had also tweeted on Sunday which states, “Will be in Odisha tomorrow morning, where I will review the situation due to Cyclone Fani and hold meetings with top officials. The Centre is committed to provide all possible assistance in relief and rehabilitation measures underway.”
Also, on Saturday, the PM spoke to the chief minister and deliberated the condition in the outcome of Fani, guaranteeing constant support from the Centre.
As per to an official, Modi is planned to review the relief and restoration work in the state on his coming back from the aerial survey.
The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), which is headed by Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha, had also reviewed the relief measures on Sunday in affected areas of Odisha and West Bengal as well Andhra Pradesh.
Also, after the destruction caused by severe cyclone ‘Fani’, the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy has launched a huge rescue and rehabilitation effort in Odisha.
On Saturday morning, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command personally carry out aerial survey of the areas which were affected by the cyclone and visited INS Chilka in order to review the relief efforts, the official statement said.
Based on the aerial surveys, the Eastern Naval Command had taken the responsibility and conducted a three-pronged rescue and rehabilitation effort positioned around Puri and its suburbs in direction with the state government and the district administration.
The statement said, “Relief and rehabilitation ‘bricks’ and ‘pallets’ (Naval parlance for containerised relief stores) comprising food material, essential medical supplies, clothing items, disinfectants, repair material, chain saws for removing damaged trees, torches and batteries, etc have been sent to the INS Chilka, a naval establishment at Odisha, closest to Puri.”
Navy spokesperson Captain D K Sharma said, “The Flag Officer took an on ground stock of the situation and damage to the assets, men and material during his approximately one-hour long visit to the location. The Admiral commended the Staff for their proactive preparatory activities to mitigate effects of the cyclone. He was happy to take note of the various Relief Operations and Medical Assistance being rendered by the unit to the neighbouring villages such as Gadadwar, Amritpur, Kharibandh and Athrawati.”
Various states have also offered contribution to Odisha for relief and rehabilitation efforts, where Tamil Nadu contributed Rs 10 crore, Maharashtra: Rs 10 crore, Uttar Pradesh: Rs 10 crore, Gujarat: Rs 5 crore and Chhattisgarh: Rs 11 crore.
