An airplane carrying football players from a Brazilian soccer team has crashed on its way to Medellin’s international airport. The airplane with 72 people on board including football players was heading to Colombia for a regional tournament final.
After the incident, Mayor of Medellin – Federico Gutierrez said that it is possible there are survivors. It is a tragedy of huge proportions
Gutierrez told Blu Radio that the chartered airplane is believed to have crashed shortly on his way to the site in a mountainous area outside the city.
Mayor said that the emergency rescuers team and ambulances were on their way. It is not clear what caused the crash.
The airport authority of Medellin confirmed that the aircraft departed from Bolivia and was transporting the Chapecoense soccer team from southern Brazil, which was scheduled to play the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.
