Nine Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested while fishing off the Sri Lankan coast while in another incident 50 nets were damaged by the Lankan Navy when local fishermen were fishing in Katchatheevu, a top fisheries department said on Sunday. Ten fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Naval personnel when they were fishing off near the island, officials said on Tuesday.
In the first incident, the fishermen in the district were arrested while fishing near an island, a sensitive area where the LTTE had their camp around midnight last night, Pudukottai Assistant Director of fisheries Sekhar said.The fishermen from Thangachimadam here have been taken to Kangesanthurai, the official said.
The Lankan Naval personnel allegedly damaged fishing nets and other equipment besides seizing their boat, Assistant Director of Fisheries said.
Five Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested and their boat by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in Lankan waters on February 1.
Also, 34-year-old Tamil Nadu fisherman from here was injured due to allegedly attacked by the Lankan naval personnel for fishing off Neduntheevu.
The Tamil Nadu government had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in securing the release of 25 fishermen and 119 fishing boats from Lankan custody on February 2.
