2020 Summer Paralympics is commencing from 24th August 2021, Tuesday and after a fruitful and successful winning of 1 gold, 2 silver and three bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Paralympians of India are all set to perform in the upcoming event of international multi-sports para-sports event and once again are going to give Indian’s a reason to be proud of. Earlier the event was scheduled to take place in March 2021, however, due to the Wuhan virus pandemic, the event was later postponed to 2021. Just like the 2020 Summer Olympics, the upcoming season of Paralympics is also hosted by Tokyo, Japan.
Summer Paralympics 2020 Schedule
The motto of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games is “United by Emotion”. Keeping in mind the ongoing pandemic, the event will take place mainly behind closed doors meaning that this time no public spectator shall be allowed to come to the venues. The opening ceremony shall begin on 24th August 2021 and will most probably be opened by Emperor Naruhito. This time a total of 4,400 athletes are expected to take part in 540 events in 22 sports and will originally begin from 25th August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Another key highlight of the 2021 Summer Paralympic is that sports such as Taekwondo and Badminton have been introduced this time, replacing it with 7-a-side football and Sailing.
India at the 2020 Summer Paralympics: Schedules
India will be participating in this international tournament and will appear in 54 events including Men, Women and Mixed in 9 sports which includes:

- Badminton
- Athletics
- Powerlifting
- Paracanoeing
- Shooting
- Swimming
- Taekwondo
- Table Tennis
Archery
The Archery sports is scheduled to take place on 27th August 2021 and under the men’s category in the ‘Recurve Individual Open’ Event, Harvinder Singh and Vivek Chikara will be seen representing India in this sports at the Summer Paralympics 2021. Meanwhile, in the Compound Individual Open event, male archers, Rakesh Kumar and Shyam Sundar Swami will be seen representing our country. Under the women’s and mixed category, Jyoti Baliyan will also be seen taking part in Compound Idividual as well as mixed team open event in the Archery sports.
Athletics
Athletics sports will take place from 28th August 2021 to 4th September 2021. Under this sports, numerous events will take place including Club throw, Discus Throw, High Jump, Javeline Throw, Shot Put, 100m T13. Moreover, everyone has high hopes for Devendra Jhaharia who has brought two gold medals for the country at the previous two Paralympic seasons under the Javeline Throw event.
Badminton
Badminton is making its debut at the Paralympics games this time and thus, every sports enthusiast is enthralled to witness this sport immensely. Badminton sports also includes various events including Singles SL3, SL4, SS6 and will commence from 1st Sept and end on 2nd Sept 2021.
Powerlifting
Under powerlifting, we have Jaideep Deswal under the Men’s 65kg event and Sakina Khatun under Women’s 50 Kg event. Both these events are taking place on 27th August 2021.
Paracanoeing
Under Paracanoeing, we have Prachi Yadav under the Women’s VL2 event. She is all set to become the first para canoe athlete from India at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. This event is scheduled to take place on 2nd September 2021.
Swimming
Under the Swimming sports Men’s category, Niranjan Mukundan will be taking part in the 50m Butterfly S7 event while Suyash Jadhav will take part in the 200 Individual Medley SM7 and 50m Butterfly S7. The event is taking place on 27th August 2021.
Shooting
Under the Shooting sports, we have more than 15 shooters who are taking part in the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics under numerous events including Men’s P1: 10m air pistol SH1, Women’s P2-10 m air pistol & rifle SH1, Mixed P3- 25m pistol SH1 and others. All these events under the shooting sports will be starting from 30th August 2021 and ending on 5th Septmeber 2021.
Table Tennis
Under the Table Tennis Sports, Sonalben Madhubahi Patel under the women’s category will be taking part in the Individual C3 event while Bhavana Hasumukhbai Patel will be taking part in the Individual C4 event. Both the event are taking place on 25th August 2021.
Taekwondo
After Badminton, Taekwondo has become another sport that has been introduced at the 2020 Summer Paralympics for the first time. In this sport, Indian Athlete, Aruna Tanwar under the Women’s 44 K44-49 Kg event will be taking part. This event is scheduled to take place on 2nd September.
