SC prohibits plying of 15-yr-old petrol, 10-yr-old diesel vehicles in NCR
As the condition of air is deteriorating and according to AQI (Air Quality Index) the quality of Delhi-NCR air was at 366 on Sunday which determine very critical scenario. By seeing the seriousness and hazardous effect of the situation, Supreme Court has taken strict action in order to decrease certain amount of air pollution from Delhi. The Supreme Court directed transport department to provide the details and list of 15 year old petrol as well as 10 year old diesel vehicles on the website of transport department and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)
A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta said that this should be published in the newspaper in order to make people more aware about the scenario. They also added by quoting “if you take a walk in the evening to the old Delhi railway station, you will see poor people on cycle rickshaws. They have no option but to work outside to earn a living. Hundreds of people are earning their livelihood outside…. How do you tell them? Will you tell them to kill themselves by working in all this pollution?”
Other measures are also directed by the court to create an immediate social media account by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) which will be open for citizen to lodge their complaints directly in terms of pollution. After lodging the complaints by the citizens, appropriate and immediate actions will be taken by the authorities against the people violating the orders.
Some steps have been taken to control the pollution in the Delhi-NCR as well as the adjoining areas under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) by EPCA (Environment Pollution Control Authority). In Delhi, EPCA (Environment Pollution Control Authority) also banned the construction sites where the construction work was going on, these sites will be banned from 1st November to 10th November 2018. These actions will be taken by EPCA (Environment Pollution Control Authority) under the recommendations of CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) .
The orders will definitely help in cleaning the toxic air in Delhi’s environment to some extent. Earlier, this order was also given by National Green Tribunal, who gave an order of banning 15 year olds petrol as well as 10 year old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR but was rejected by the apex court. Now these orders are from Supreme Court and this must be followed by the citizen of Delhi or otherwise serious actions will be taken for those who are not following the orders sincerely.
