The final verdict of the Goa session Court in the rape case against the founder and ex-editor in chief of Tehelka Magazine, Tarun Tejpal is adjourned to 19th May 2021. Earlier, on 27th March 2021, the court directed the case to be heard on 12th May. In a statement given by the Special Public Prosecutor, Francisco Tavora, he informed the media that if the charges against Tejpal is proved, he will be sentenced to a minimum of 10 years to maximum life imprisonment but that depends on the judgement of the Goa Court.
On 30th November 2013, Tejapal was arrested by the police of Goa, after he was accused of sexually assaulting his junior journalist in an elevator of a five-star hotel in North Goa. However, at the time, he accused the BJP Government in Goa of doing dirty politics and denied all the accusations against him. Thereafter, he quit the post of editor for 6 months. On 19th May 2014, Tejapal was granted temporary bail from the court in order to attend the funeral of his late mother and since then he has been out of jail.
Later an FIR was registered against Tejpal by the goa police and thereafter, On 29th September 2017, a case regarding the same was filed in the session court of Goa against him on the charges of molestation, sexual abuse and exploitation under the several sections of IPC. However, Tejpal kept deny all the accusation and charges against him and last year in the month of August, he also went to the Supreme court for removing the charges and allegations against him.
However, to his utter disappointment, the supreme court denied his request to retract the charges and ordered the session bench to conclude the case within six months. It’s been eight years since the case was registered against him and presently, he is on bail since 1st July 2014. The case has been stretched out for a long time and the media houses and others are desperately waiting for the judgment of the Goa session court.
It will be interesting to know whether the judgment of the Goa court will be in the favour of Tejpal or not and if the latter will be the scenario, then it will be interesting to know whether he will be sentenced to imprisonment of 10 years or for a lifetime. The charges against Tejpal is severe and if he is convicted by the Goa session court for the same then, will he chose the route to the supreme court. We will keep you updated, till then, stay tuned with us.
