Tens of thousands without power in Spokane amid thunderstorm across the Inland Northwest

As major thunderstorms sweep through the region, power outages are taking place throughout Spokane Tuesday night. People all across the region are experiencing widespread power outages. According to the report of Avista, there were close to 13,000 outages in Spokane alone until 9:30 p.m.on Tuesday night. The report further added that there were 334 active outages affecting more than 18 thousand customers.

4 News Now’s Kyle Simchuk was at the scene in Browne’s Addition, where witnesses say a large tree was struck by lightning and is now blocking the road.

Earlier on Tuesday, a power outage was issued for the South Hill as well. According to Avista’s outage map, the power cut was affecting people who live near Lincoln Heights and Glenrose. It was also reported that the power outage took place at 6:28 p.m.

According to KREM 2’s Casey Decker, several traffic lights were out in downtown Spokane. Traffic lights at 29th and Ray Street and 17th and Ray Street were also affected by the outage.

Avista further added that it is currently evaluating the situation. However, the Avista outage map showed that power is expected to be restored by 11 p.m.

As per the latest update that the Avista outage map depicted is that it’s now showing over 17,000 home and businesses are without power because of Tuesday night’s storms.
