Recently people have started to notice something unusual on the big social media platform Facebook and on Instagram. What is this unusual thing? Well, people have started to notice that both the platforms are blocking the hashtag #sikh on their platforms. This problem was reported many users on who tried to use the hashtag on Twitter. Some people are able to access the hashtag while some are not. A similar issue also occured in the past on Instagram but it was soon rectified by the company.
The Sikh Hashtag Has Been Blocked By Facebook
Instagram posted about the whole situation from their Twitter account saying that they were unaware of the issue until they received feedbacks from the users. The company also made it clear that they unblocked the hashtag as soon as they got to know about it. The tweet written by Instagram said ” We became aware that these hashtags were blocked today following feedback we received from the community and quickly moved to unblock them. Our processes fell down here, and we’re sorry,”
Instagram also said that the blocking of the hashtag was purely a mistake on their part which was not on purpose. The company further wrote that “Thanks for your patience today. We investigated this issue and found that these hashtags were mistakenly blocked on March 7th following a report that was inaccurately reviewed by our teams,”
Many people from the sikh community reported this error and said that whenever they tried to use the #sikh, an error message will be displayed on the screen banning them from using the hashtag. The message sent said “Posts for this hashtag are temporarily hidden because of unusual activity that may not meet Instagram’s Community Guidelines”.
This made the entire community outragious and they reported the issue on Twitter. The Sikh Press Association even posted a tweet about the whole situation and even tagged the Instagram head Adam Mosseri. They said, “Why has Instagram blocked the hashtag #Sikh @instagram @mosseri?In the same week that #Neverforget1984 trends on Twitter, Instagram seemingly conspires to suppress the truth about the atrocities of the 1984 Sikh genocide by censoring the faith of 27 million people.”
However Instagram apologized for the whole situation and said that Sikh community is an important part of the community and it was a genuine mistake. He said that” This is an incredibly important, painful time for the Sikh community. We designed hashtags to allow people to come together and share with one another. It’s never our intention to silence the voices of this community, we are taking the necessary steps so this doesn’t happen again,”.
This isn’t the first run through a network grumbled of getting obstructed on Instagram. Prior this week, posts with #blacklivesmatter were edited on the photograph sharing application. Individuals whined of not having the option to post the hashtag or connect with the hashtag. Instagram later uncovered that an imperfection in its spam discovery framework caused the glitch.
Although, the issue has been fixed now and you can use the hashtag again on Instagram.
