Vinesh Phogat Wins Gold Medal in Matteo Pelicone Wrestling Event, Reclaims No.1 Rank

India women’s wrestler Vinesh Phogat has lived up to our expectations by making the country proud in the Rome event. In the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series event which was held in Rome, the wrestler has clinched the top rank in her category. This is her second gold medal in two weeks which she has gained in the final round of the event.

In the final round, she has defeated Diana Weicker from Canada by 4-0 points in the 53kg title category. Vinesh Phogat is also the only Indian woman wrestler who has qualified for her spot for the Tokyo Games and just like her other feats, she has added another achievement to the list.

The 26-year-old World bronze medallist has scored all her points in the first period which is also carried on in the second period as well for making sure to finish at the top spot with a great score victory.

This is not her only feat in the last two weeks as she had also won a gold medal last week in Kyiv. The performance of Vinesh in that clash was exceptional giving us a glimpse of her preparations for the upcoming events and which she also successfully proved by getting another gold medal in the Rome event.

When Vinesh entered the competition, she was positioned at the third spot as a world number but she has again clinched the first spot by gaining 14 major points through this event. However, the Canadian wrestler was even positioned as low as 40 earlier joining this tournament but with her great performance, she now has changed the situation and is placed just behind Vinesh at the number two spot.

It was a great combat to watch as Vinesh did not even let any single point at this competition, and won two of her totally played three combats by restraining her opponents while receiving injury walkouts in the remaining two in the eight-woman field. In the semi-final round, Vinesh had played against Canadian Samantha Leigh Stewart in which she won against her in 42 seconds and made her way to the final. Earlier this, she had defeated Nandini Bajirao Saolkhe in the first round of the competition.

On the other side, Sarita Mor in the 57kg category had won a silver medal in that combat which was held on Saturday. Meanwhile, Vinesh has also qualified for the upcoming Olympics after securing at the World Championships in the year 2019.
