Recently, WhatsApp users are getting links on their smartphones, claiming to change the application’s theme as well as its trademark in pink colour. Along with experiencing the change in colour from green to pink, this link also claims that it will bring some new feature to your instant messaging app. On noticing this scam, cyber experts have warned WhatsApp users to not pay attention to such links and avoid clicking on any kind of these link that is promising the same. If you will click on this link, you will be directed to a new page rather than the original WhatsApp installation page. On that page, you will be asked to download this WhatsApp Pink app on your device. However, it is just a scam and users are advised to not click on such links or to download any malicious app from this link.
The users must take note that the WhatsApp Pink app has no relation with WhatsApp or else with Facebook, in short, it is just a scam that can steal data from your phone. Rajshekhar Rajaharia, who is a Cybersecurity researcher, has informed and warned the users about WhatsApp Pink through a post on the social media platform. In his post, he provided a number of screenshots of this malicious app, showing how the app imitates WhatsApp in order to scam the users.
He tweeted, “Beware of WhatsApp Pink!!” Informing the users about this malicious app Rajshekhar wrote that this virus has been spread in Whatsapp groups providing you with an APK download link. “Don’t click on any of the links with the name of #WhatsappPink,” he added. He warned that if you click on that link or download the app, then full access to your phone is going to be lost.
According to the recent report by Gadgets 360, Delhi Police inspector Data Ram Yadav has informed Rajaharia about this malicious app. He informed it to Rajaharia after spotting the circulation of the same message/ link in one of their police WhatsApp groups. The app is promising to bring new features along with changing the colour of this messaging app into pink, but nothing is true but just a part of a scam to steal user’s identity and data.
However, this is not happing for the first time as there are many fake or scammed versions of WhatsApp that have been circulating on the app for many years. Most commonly, these apps or links are created by hackers and the main aim of such malicious apps is to attack the users’ data for their gain.
