The 25-year old Polish track and field athlete, Maria Andrejczyk sold her silver medal from the 2020 Summer Olympics at an auction for $125,000 to raise funds for the heart surgery of an eight-month-old infant boy. As per the initial reports, a supermarket chain in Poland named “Zabka Polska” has won the auction for the same with the above-mentioned bid. However, the astonishing fact here is that after winning the bidding, they asked Javeline Thrower to keep the silver medal with her. Andrejczyk represented Poland in Javeline at the Tokyo Olympics and finished at second place in the women’s javelin throw event by 64.61mtere.

Meanwhile, Liu Shiying of China finished at first place and won a Gold Medal for her country after a throw of 66.34 meters. On Wednesday, 18th August 2021, the Polish Javeline Thrower revealed in one of her Facebook posts about her decision of selling her medal to the people. As per the post, Andrejczyk stated ” she found a fundraised for an 8-months old baby boy from Poland who goes by the name, Miloszek Malysa’.” The boy is reported to have a major defect in his heart and was in urgent need of surgery.
However, because of the financial constraints, the family of the infant was having a hard time raising the amount for their babies heart surgery. Andrejczyk further added in her post, “Although, one of the family from Kubus, passed on the collected funds to the family of Malysa, after their own child could not make it out due to delayed operation. Those funds for the heart surgery was not enough.”
Thus the javelin thrower came forward and decided to auction her silver medal from the Tokyo Olympics for this great and noble cause. As per the reports, the Polish company named, “Zabka Polska” won the auction bid of $125,000 and allowing the boy to get the surgery at Stanford University. Moreover, the company has also requested the track and field athlete to keep her medal. The Silver medal won by the 25-year old Maria Andrejczyk at the 2020 Summers Olympics was her very first Olympic medal.
Earlier, she also took part in the 2016 Summer Rio de Janeiro Olympics and ended up missing the same by 2 centimetres. Before taking part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Andrejczyk also underwent major shoulder surgery after suffering an injury on the shoulder, while in the year 2018, she was tested positive with bone cancer. Undoubtedly, after going through with some much, she finally won her first-ever silver medal at the Olympics, and later decided to auction the same to raise funds for an eight-month-old boy for heart surgery. Zabka, the company that won the auction was generous enough as they returned the medal to the Poland Javelin Thrower.
