Why is International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8?
International Women’s Day has a history which started around 108 years ago. First when the Socialist Party of America celebrated 15,000 women who protested for long work hours, low pay, and the lack of voting rights in New York City.
It was originally called National Woman’s Day, as the monumental annual celebration spread across the world but it was Russia who unknowingly set the March 8 trend. Although International Women’s Day became an official holiday in Russia as well. Many men were off at war those days, while women dealt with food shortages and a government who wouldn’t listen to women.
On March 8, 1917, more than thousands of Russian women took to the streets demanding change over this. This unified cry for help paved the way for Russian women to be granted voting rights soon after.
What is the theme for International Women’s Day 2020?
In 1975, the United Nations created an officially recognized name International Women’s Day, and, in 1996, this began to adopt an annual theme for every year. The first theme created then was “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future.” In 2020, the theme is #EachforEqual is means shared goal throughout the year. This will collectively initiate to create a gender-equal world.
This time IWD 2020 campaign theme draws the attention of “collective individualism,” which means the idea that every person is a part of a whole, and that a person’s actions, behaviours, and mindsets can all have a positive impact on this larger society.
